1118 Cases of H1N1 Swine Flu in Canada

The Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed 1,118 cases of H1N1 influenza have been reported as of May 27, 2009.

To date 43 hospitalizations and two deaths, have been reported among laboratory-confirmed cases in Canada.

The WHO's alert stands at Phase 5. WHO Officials are looking for signs the H1N1 Flu has become established in a region outside North America as they consider a Phase 6 alert, indicating that a global pandemic is underway. The WHO alert scale doesn't consider the severity of an illness itself.

As of Wednesday, May 27,2009 there have been 13,398 laboratory-confirmed cases and 95 deaths overall, the WHO reported.

Cases of H1N1 Flu Virus in Canada

As of May 12 2009, a total of 358 laboratory-confirmed cases of H1N1 Flu Virus have been reported in 9 provinces and 1 territory in Canada (see Table 1 below).

As of May 11, 2009, half the cases are 22 years of age or younger (median: 22 years; range: 1 – 66 years). To date, 5 cases have been hospitalized and one death has been reported. The most recent date of onset of illness is May 6, 2009.
